National Security Must Come Before Politics

Nov 1, 02:55 PM | Harry Reid

This past weekend, we witnessed the indictment of the I. Lewis Libby, the Vice President’s Chief of Staff and a senior Advisor to President Bush. Libby is the first sitting White House staffer to be indicted in 135 years. This indictment raises very serious charges. It asserts this Administration engaged in actions that both harmed our national security and are morally repugnant.

The decision to place U.S. soldiers in harm’s way is the most significant responsibility the Constitution invests in the Congress. The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really about: how the Administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions.

As a result of its improper conduct, a cloud now hangs over this Administration. This cloud is further darkened by the Administration’s mistakes in prisoner abuse scandal, Hurricane Katrina, and the cronyism and corruption in numerous agencies.

And, unfortunately, it must be said that a cloud also hangs over this Republican-controlled Congress for its unwillingness to hold this Republican Administration accountable for its misdeeds on all of these issues.

Let’s take a look back at how we got here with respect to Iraq Mr. President. The record will show that within hours of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, senior officials in this Administration recognized these attacks could be used as a pretext to invade Iraq.

The record will also show that in the months and years after 9/11, the Administration engaged in a pattern of manipulation of the facts and retribution against anyone who got in its way as it made the case for attacking Iraq.

There are numerous examples of how the Administration misstated and manipulated the facts as it made the case for war. Administration statements on Saddam’s alleged nuclear weapons capabilities and ties with Al Qaeda represent the best examples of how it consistently and repeatedly manipulated the facts.

The American people were warned time and again by the President, the Vice President, and the current Secretary of State about Saddam’s nuclear weapons capabilities. The Vice President said Iraq “has reconstituted its nuclear weapons.” Playing upon the fears of Americans after September 11, these officials and others raised the specter that, left unchecked, Saddam could soon attack America with nuclear weapons.

Obviously we know now their nuclear claims were wholly inaccurate. But more troubling is the fact that a lot of intelligence experts were telling the Administration then that its claims about Saddam’s nuclear capabilities were false.
The situation was very similar with respect to Saddam’s links to Al Qaeda. The Vice President told the American people, “We know he’s out trying once again to produce nuclear weapons and we know he has a longstanding relationship with various terrorist groups including the Al Qaeda organization.”

The Administration’s assertions on this score have been totally discredited. But again, the Administration went ahead with these assertions in spite of the fact that the government’s top experts did not agree with these claims.

What has been the response of this Republican-controlled Congress to the Administration’s manipulation of intelligence that led to this protracted war in Iraq? Basically nothing. Did the Republican-controlled Congress carry out its constitutional obligations to conduct oversight? No. Did it support our troops and their families by providing them the answers to many important questions? No. Did it even attempt to force this Administration to answer the most basic questions about its behavior? No.

Unfortunately the unwillingness of the Republican-controlled Congress to exercise its oversight responsibilities is not limited to just Iraq. We see it with respect to the prisoner abuse scandal. We see it with respect to Katrina. And we see it with respect to the cronyism and corruption that permeates this Administration.

Time and time again, this Republican-controlled Congress has consistently chosen to put its political interests ahead of our national security. They have repeatedly chosen to protect the Republican Administration rather than get to the bottom of what happened and why.

There is also another disturbing pattern here, namely about how the Administration responded to those who challenged its assertions. Time and again this Administration has actively sought to attack and undercut those who dared to raise questions about its preferred course.

For example, when General Shinseki indicated several hundred thousand troops would be needed in Iraq, his military career came to an end. When then OMB Director Larry Lindsay suggested the cost of this war would approach $200 billion, his career in the Administration came to an end. When U.N. Chief Weapons Inspector Hans Blix challenged conclusions about Saddam’s WMD capabilities, the Administration pulled out his inspectors. When Nobel Prize winner and IAEA head Mohammed el-Baridei raised questions about the Administration’s claims of Saddam’s nuclear capabilities, the Administration attempted to remove him from his post. When Joe Wilson stated that there was no attempt by Saddam to acquire uranium from Niger, the Administration launched a vicious and coordinated campaign to demean and discredit him, going so far as to expose the fact that his wife worked as a CIA agent.

Given this Administration’s pattern of squashing those who challenge its misstatements, what has been the response of this Republican-controlled Congress? Again, absolutely nothing. And with their inactions, they provide political cover for this Administration at the same time they keep the truth from our troops who continue to make large sacrifices in Iraq.

This behavior is unacceptable. The toll in Iraq is as staggering as it is solemn. More than 2,000 Americans have lost their lives. Over 90 Americans have paid the ultimate sacrifice this month alone – the fourth deadliest month since the war began. More than 15,000 have been wounded. More than 150,000 remain in harm’s way. Enormous sacrifices have been and continue to be made.

The troops and the American people have a right to expect answers and accountability worthy of that sacrifice. For example, 40 Senate Democrats wrote a substantive and detailed letter to the President asking four basic questions about the Administration’s Iraq policy and received a four sentence answer in response. These Senators and the American people deserve better.

They also deserve a searching and comprehensive investigation about how the Bush Administration brought this country to war. Key questions that need to be answered include:

o How did the Bush Administration assemble its case for war against Iraq?
o Who did Bush Administration officials listen to and who did they ignore?
o How did senior Administration officials manipulate or manufacture intelligence presented to the Congress and the American people?
o What was the role of the White House Iraq Group or WHIG, a group of senior White House officials tasked with marketing the war and taking down its critics?
o How did the Administration coordinate its efforts to attack individuals who dared to challenge the Administration’s assertions?
o Why has the Administration failed to provide Congress with the documents that will shed light on their misconduct and misstatements?

Unfortunately the Senate committee that should be taking the lead in providing these answers is not. Despite the fact that the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee publicly committed to examine many of these questions more than 1 and a half years ago, he has chosen not to keep this commitment. Despite the fact that he restated that commitment earlier this year on national television, he has still done nothing.

At this point, we can only conclude he will continue to put politics ahead of our national security. If he does anything at this point, I suspect he will play political games by producing an analysis that fails to answer any of these important questions. Instead, if history is any guide, this analysis will attempt to disperse and deflect blame away from the Administration.

We demand that the Intelligence Committee and other committees in this body with jurisdiction over these matters carry out a full and complete investigation immediately as called for by Democrats in the committee’s annual intelligence authorization report. Our troops and the American people have sacrificed too much. It is time this Republican-controlled Congress put the interests of the American people ahead of their own political interests.

  14. Thank you and good luck. As all grade-school students learn, but as this administration and Republican Congress seems to have forgotten, our brilliant constitution was intentionally written to provide checks and balances. In that way, the Founders thought, the power of government could be kept in check.

Without the true exercise of those checks and balances, we are all lost—and doomed to live under the very totalitarianism the Constitution protects against.

    I fear for our country.

  19. Thank You for closing the senate session today Sir…it was the right move for America. We, the people have waited for way to long to have sen Roberts hold those oversight hearings and it is time to take strong steps to make him hold those hearings and hold them IN PUBLIC.

I hope Sen Durbins statement that the majority should be prepared to face this call for a closed session every day until they ‘face reality’ and hold those hearings was NOT an empty threat.

if it takes going into closed session to make the gop hold oversight hearings…CLOSE THOSE SESSION Sir.

Harry is demonstrating a similar behavior today by running around the backs of the other leaders of the Senate and calling this secret session.

It is with a feeling of joy, relief and anticipation of the future that I’m watching the news now.

Finally truth, justice and clarity are starting to shine their lights onto our political process. Keep up the great work – and I don’t want to see my Senators until the doors are open again and the truth is forced from this corrupt administration.

I too, fear our democracy is in peril. We cannot let this administration ontinure to go unchecked!

Please continue to demand answers to the source of the corrupt intelligence that brought us to war. One of the principal claims (yellow cake from Niger) was based on a forgery.

We need the truth. Nothing less! Twenty-five members of the US armed forces have died in the past week alone.

Thank you! Many, many of us Americans are looking to all of you, our elected representatives, to stand up to this administration and its controlled congress NOW. Use whatever means…including shutting down the U.S. Senate to not only ask the tough questions but to demand ANSWERS. We are outraged that we were “duped” into going to war; worn out from the never ending corruption of the Republican Party; the clever diversions…blah…blah…blah… and WANT OUR DEMOCRACY BACK! By the lies about Iraq, we are subspect in everything we now try to do in the world. I need not even mention that with our own government leaking information how much damage has been done to our own safety. YOU GO HARRY! Having a closed-door session with the senate is a good start. The American people deserve the truth and nothing else should move in D.C. until the dems request is met. Dems are behind you all the way – make Bush and his cronies answer the questions about the run up to the Iraq war. We all know if Cheney knew about Wilson’s wife, Bush knew. Bush cannot sneeze without Cheney there to wipe his nose. Don’t allow them to change the subject in the news media, because that is their way to try and get the American people interested in some other “GOP urgent matter”. I for one am sick to death with all these scare tactics. If it isn’t a terrorist attack, it’s the bird flu. Give me a break. Get those dogs out of the White House

  114. Dear Senator Reid,

Excellent job today forcing the Senate to discuss the Administrations’s intelligence misuse leading to the Iraq war.

The CIA Leak case is much more than Scotter Libby’s indictment: It is about an administration that was not only willing to lie, manipulate and twist the facts to fit a seemingly pre-determined agenda to send America to war against Iraq, they were willing to compromise our intelligence services and National Security in order to accomplish their pre-determined goal.

Hundreds of Billions of taxpayer’s dollars have been wasted and over 2000 brave soldiers have died over what seems to be a bunch of lies. Meanwhile, Osama Bin Laden, the culprit of the 9/11 attacks, remians free. This iis inexcusable.

Good to see that Democrats still have cojones! As soon as I read the news, I could not help but to make a contribution to the Searchlight Leadership Fund. Albeit a small contribution, I am happy to be a part in helping you making America proud again.

Good luck and keep up the good work for America.

  134. Reid, it’s finally time to shut the whole goddamn thing down.

Question Pat Roberts directly on his involvement in white-washing phase 1….

Why did Libby order Pat to white-wash it?

    What was behind the white-wash?

Why the fuck didn’t we HEAR about the Niger forgeries, Curveball, and report on false-flag where Saddam wanted to get Uranium from Russia?!???

WHY DIDN’T WE HEAR ABOUT THE “INTELLIGENCE & FACTS BEING FIXED AROUND THE POLICY” ?!

Lets see if you can do it!

Pat Roberts white-washed phase 1. By order of Scooter Libby and Dick Cheney, heads of the PNAC based Israeli think-tank.

So how about calling him out? Rockefeller & Roberts whitewashed it. It’s high time we find out what REALLY happened on 10 downing street…

  150. If Dick “Richard” Cheney deliberately falsified intelligence, and co-ordinated his White House Iraq Group to feed bogus intel estimates into the CIA…..estimates based on reports from the American Enterprise Institute, a neo-con nest of extremist Likuds….

Then Vice “President” Cheney should not only be impeached, but convicted in the Senate. Further he should be indicted for the role he played in destroying Brewster Jennings….

And finally sent to a maximum fortified prison. War Crimes or not, he should be convicted.

If the President knowingly was a part of this, even if not directly involved, he should be impeached for his incompetence or complicity or both. It’s time to tear apart this little game of cat and mouse and throw down the gauntlet…..

  173. Senator Reid, thank you for calling the Republicans bluff. We Americans do need truthful answers, not lies. I’m glad that someone at the top of the chain does realize and feel for the troops and their families enough to start saying, “Listen, enough is enough.” I know many troops who want to come home and they know they were lied to to be put there and they are being lied to in order to be kept there. Let’s bring the boys home at least. And if the republicans that support this war believe that we should keep it going…let’s suit them up, drop them in the middle of Iraq and see if they feel differently after being on the other side of the IED.

  179. Thank you, Senator Reid.

Those who are upset at any investigation should remember that truth is not afraid of the light.

The truth is what the American people deserve, and it is Congress’ duty to keep the light on the Presidency.

Republican or Democrat should not matter; Integrity and Sincerity are what the people need from their leaders. When our leaders speak, we should not have to wonder at the truth of their words, or the motivation behind their actions.

ALL public servants should be held to the highest ethical standards. Asking for answers is not unpatriotic; it is the single most patriotic thing we can do for our country.

Thank you again; and please keep looking for answers, no matter what it takes. We, the people, are depending on you.

  189. Well, Harry,

From me comes a “Thanks” and an “It’s about damn time!”

I just caught the USA Today article on this—
“Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., said Reid was making “some sort of stink about Scooter Libby and the CIA leak.”

A former majority leader, Lott said a closed session was appropriate for such overarching matters as impeachment and chemical weapons — the two topics that last sent the senators into such sessions.

In addition, Lott said, Reid’s move violated the Senate’s tradition of courtesy and consent. But there was nothing in Senate rules enabling Republicans to thwart Reid’s effort.”

Courtesy is easy when you’re the unchallenged Goliath in the room, but courtesy didn’t help David.
Let’s consider this a first stone, and one well-deserved.

The idea that impeachment and chemical weapons are deserving of a closed session while the actions that took us to war pre-emptively, unilaterally, and not as a last resort, costing the lives of more than 2000 American soldiers and countless Iraqi civilians are not so deserving is absolute idiocy. And were he handy, I’d tell that to Mr. Lott’s face.

Somebody needs to remind him that there are people coming back in flag-draped coffins that no one wants to see. Americans don’t want to see it because it saddens them. The Bush Administration doesn’t want Americans to see it, because they regard the war, as everything else, a PR issue that must be “managed”.

Thank you, Mr. Reid, for not allowing Republicans to duck this. It’s too important to the very heart of Democracy—acting on real, substantial and unvarnished information—the type of information, it appears, that was not made available for consideration.

  195. THANK YOU HARRY!

This isn’t a Democrats vs Republicans issue, this is a fight for Truth, Justice, and The American Way.

America has been under attack for the last 6 years, and not by foreign terrorists! If we expect to keep the freedoms and rule of land provided us by our forefathers and the Constitution of the United States, then we’d better be ready to fight for it right here at home. NO ONE is threatening our FREEDOM and way of life more than the Bush Administration. How long are we going to take it? I feel a total betrayal every time I look at my daughter and friend’s children – for their future here in our own country.

And Patrick, how on earth can you say a democrat administration, such as Clinton’s, ruined this country? Are you deaf, dumb, and blind? As it seems most party-line Republicans are?! All Frist can do is, like all good Republicans, is offer slogans. And Democrat Scare Tactics?!! PLEASE!!!!! That’s the Bush/Cheney MO. I’m surprised they’re not getting down to even more childish schoolyard bully statements like “I know you are but what am I?” The Republicans are an embarrassment to this country. They all need a “time out” permanently.

Would somebody please keep beating the drum on our Counterterrorism plan (worked out with Albright and others) and demand the Repubs show us theirs? Where are their ideas for defeating terror? Or is it just to invade and rebuild every hostile country?

They’re going to keep beating the drum that we “have no ideas”. We need to keep developing plans and beat a louder, more consistent drum showing them ours, and demanding they put up, or shut up.

  239. Senator Reid,

No offense, but the decision to close the Senate today was the first sign of a spine that Democrats have exhibited in the past five years. I hope this is the beginning of a trend.

Keep it up! The indictements of Abramoff, DeLay, Savafian, Noe, and Libby, are sure signs that the time has come to demand accountability from the White House, the Administration, and the Republicans in general. The stench coming out of the White House, in particular, needs to be investigated relentlessly.

Bush must be asked persistently why he is not firing Rove, when he said a year ago, that anyone in his Administration involved in the Plame leak would be fired. Of course, we all know he was lying, but that is not the point. Ask him, and ask him often! Put him on the defensive, and keep him there. Tenacity always pays.

As for Alito, I hope the Democrats will mount a filibuster against his nomination. The Democrats really have nothing to lose and everything to gain. We’ll see if the Republicans carry out their threat of using the nuclear option. I bet you that, ahead of the 2006 elections, a lot of Republicans will be reluctant to be seen as a bunch of bullies changing the rules in the middle of the game. Just look what happened to the Republicans’ popularity when they shut down the government in 1995!

Speaking of bullies, I enjoyed seeing Frist turning into a crybaby in the Senate this afternoon. That’s what bullies do, when others strike back, they run for their mommy, crying “it’s not fair”.

  240. Wikipedia:

Reid is a converted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a native of the small mining town of Searchlight, Nevada. His father was an alcoholic gold miner who committed suicide. Reid attended Basic High School in Henderson, where he had as a history teacher Mike O’Callaghan, who would play prominently in his future. Reid received his A.S. from Southern Utah State College in 1959 and in 1961 earned his B.S. from Utah State University. He moved to Washington, D.C. and worked as an officer for the U.S. Capitol Police while attending George Washington University for his degree, Reid graduated in 1964 and returned to Nevada to work as a lawyer in the state before entering politics, serving from 1968 to 1970 in the Nevada State Assembly and then being elected lieutenant governor in 1970, the same year his mentor O’Callaghan was elected governor. He served in that office until 1974, when he ran for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Alan Bible. He lost by fewer than 600 votes to former Governor Paul Laxalt.

Reid then served as Nevada state gaming commissioner from 1977 to 1981, a post which subjected him to death threats. Reid’s wife once found a bomb attached to one of their cars. A character in the film Casino played by Dick Smothers is based, in part, on Reid. An attempt was made by Jack Gordon (who would later manage and marry LaToya Jackson) to bribe Reid. Reid allowed the FBI to tape Gordon’s attempt to bribe Reid with $12,000, at which point Reid attempted to strangle Gordon, saying “You son of a bitch, you tried to bribe me.”

  247. Thank you so much. Your act today of going to a closed session AND telling America about the misdeeds of the Republicans has restored my faith in the Democratic party. Seriously, I was ready to divorce myself from the party I have belonged to all my life simply because I was sick of the Democrats sitting around with their collective tails between their legs and not saying a word about the corruption in the current administration. Now, I have my party back! Thanks!

  250. Go, Harry, Go. I have always loved you. Loved it when you ‘read your book’ on the floor a year or so ago. You made an impact today. Gave the thugs some of their own medicine. I am not letting all members off the hook, I still believe the majority were in the wrong by giving away their authority to bushco, but this is a step in the right direction to take our country back. This country has been hijacked by the Neos, Wall Street, and K Street. A lot of informed citizens are onto the game and Frist and friends are so out of touch, they don’t know, when they point their finger, three are pointing back at them. Keep up the good work and thanks for doing what you did.

All we want is for the Dems to fight. even if they lose! The time for compromise is over and the repubs are never going to respect the rules of the senate anyway. This ship of state started sinking on Nov 2004 (or perhaps when the Johns were the “best” we could come up with) and I intend to go down fighting. It is the least our Senators can do to join us in that fight. Use Wes Clark to attack the flanks since some of the Senators are “too polite”. Thank you, Senator Reid, for reminding your fellow Senators and your fellow Americans of what the Constitution demands of the legislative branch: that it act as a brake on the dangerous designs of the executive. Now more than ever, when the President and his advisors seem to think they don’t need the Senate for anything (cf. Condileeza Rice’s statement that the President could declare war on Syria without asking for the consent of the Senate), it is so vitally important that you remind the President that we, the people, still run this government, and that they lie to us at their peril.

  270. Thank you Senator Reid,

As I watched you today during your press conference, my despair and feelings of hopelessness gave way to some hope. Your courage and actions made my day, and I grateful.

Perhaps you don’t know how many of us there are just feeling utterly powerless while watching the current administration’s horror show unfold daily: the unjust war, with hundreds of thousands either dead, maimed, or otherwise suffering; the daily menu of newly passed bulldozer legislation against the people, plants, animals, and oceans of America, bullied through by deceit, greed, elitism and arrogance of the false majority created by false elections.

All my life I’ve been an optimist, believing in the best of humanity, and each person.

Mt whole worldview changed after the 2000 election, when something inside me nudged me at my conscience: “there’s something wrong here.” I began following and learning about politics, and, unfortunately it was a bad time to start learning. It’s been a pure descent into hell from there. My idealism shattered, my dreams now ever so fragile, at first a general disbelief, then an angry active fighting period, and nowadays a depression along with a deep sense of powerlessness.

Please know that these feelings do not come from my newly learned knowledge of our Constitution, but from the realization how far “THEY” have managed to destroy its inspirational ideas and concepts.

For months now I, like so many others, have observed our Democratic leaders under constant attack, their voices diminished and/or silenced not through honest discussion or genuine debate, but through lies, bullying, threats, and just plain out defiance of standard congressional rules and procedures. A Coup either already has, or still is taking place. You would know more than I do on this. I hope it’s the latter.

So many of us have been longing for the day when one or more of our Senators would finally rise and say “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”, regardless of the risks and consequences involved.

Today I saw you, and your fellow Senators Rockefeller and Durbin, and my hopes (at least for today) were met 100%.

Today you brought me and thousands others like me a hint of hope.

It was the RIGHT thing to do. What, at this point, do we all have to lose? If not now, when? If not us, who? We, your constituents, write letters, support our local candidates, donate to the Democratic Party, and show up at the phone banks, or walk the districts – but WE CANNOT DO WHAT YOU CAN. Please let this be one of many days to come.

Thank you again. For today I am full of hope.

  271. Senator Reid,

Thank you for allowing me to finally exhale, I have missed the Democratic way of life and the Democratic way the government worked. To quasi-quote a blogger from DailyKos “I’ve felt mind raped, helpless, angered, exhausted and appalled by blatant lies, flip-flops, mean-spirited, arrogance and incompetence by the bush adminstration, the minority neo-cons, the “religious right” and everyone who does not question what is “right”. BTW, when the DEMOCRATIC PARTY become the LEFT. I thought (as far back as I can rember) during Kennedy, we were considered the RIGHT.

Again, I just want to thank you for saying what I have felt and still feel. I have questions, I want answers or resolutions or something besides “non-answers”.

There are millions of us waiting for the chance to “take our country back!” Today gives us hope. The people need to hear the VISION of the Democratic party. 291. Sen. Reid,

I want to thank you for your actions today in the Senate, forcing the Republicans to force the Senate Intelligence Committee to investigate how intelligence was used to promote the case for going to war in Iraq. I’ve been very depressed about the state of the Democratic Party and its seeming unwillingness to stand up and fight the actions of the Republicans in Congress and the White House. And this country is now in a terrible state because of it. We’re in a war that should never have been declared, our air and water are more polluted than ever, more people than ever lack health insurance, our children are starving, and countless thousands of people who were displaced by this season’s hurricanes are not getting the help they need. Yet the richest among us continue to get richer, all because of the policies of the Bush administration and a Republican-dominated Congress.

Please continue to make your case loudly and forcefully to the Senate and the media. Hopefully, all of the rest of our Democratic senators and representatives will follow your lead and rediscover their spines before it’s too late. I’m behind you all the way.

  295. Don’t let them change the subject!

The Harriet Miers nomination was just a placeholder until Fitzgerald was forced to wrap up the results of the grand jury. They threw Alito’s nomination in just in time to divert attention from the cooked intelligence – again.

It almost worked too. Both CBS and ABC evening news missed the closed session because it was displaced by the Alito nomination and the bird flu scare. NBC led with the closed session story but gave much more time to the “Fear” President terrorizing an audience with more allusions to “wild fire” very reminiscent of his “mushroom cloud” rhetoric.

Good Job, Senator. Don’t ever think we aren’t paying attention, because we are!

BTW: Why is it that anything that upsets Senator Frist and the Republican monopoly-on-power is an affront to America? Why is it that insider trading on his “blind” trust isn’t an affront to America?

  305. Senator Reid,

I would like to acknowledge your efforts today to restore the dignity and future of this country. It is a sad set of events that the very lives of this country’s citizens is dependent upon a single minority party. Yet that is the situation we face today.

I know it cannot be easy to face the obstructionism, hypocrisy, and ultimately, damage that the GOP Senate is inflicting upon this country while striving to maintain some degree of comity and cooperation with the majority party. I thank you, for myself, and for this country, for choosing to take steps to protect us from the wolves.

You were absolutely correct today. We deserve answers. We deserve accountability. We deserve a national legislative body which will fulfill its constitutional mandate to act for the good of the country, not a political party.

You have brought us hope, but I presume that it must not have been easy for you to go off the beaten path to force the GOP to assume some semblance of responsibility and professionalism. You made the right choice, and have illustrated your willingness and ability to put the good of the country over political considerations. We will remember this.

    Again, thank you.

  315. At last! After almost five nightmarish years, I’m once again proud to be an American—a LIBERAL American, and a lifelong Democrat! Congratulations, today was brilliant. Keep the heat on those G.O.P. S.O.B.’s! Ever since Bush stole Florida they’ve been acting like they represent 99% of the U.S.A., but the better the country gets to know them, the less they like ‘em. The majority is with you, Harry. Keep up the good work!

  317. Well-done today: just the right time for the nation to take notice and for people to sympathize vicariously with the message. Now, perhaps there’s a way of finally also getting to the bottom of how Cheney and Enron crippled California’s economy and have contributed to national difficulties in general. I live in Michigan now, but I recall how absurd it was when those fake blackouts were going on in California because Enron was shutting of the power and Bush claimed that was evidence for why we needed to drill in Alaska! As though oil and electicity are the same thing! I think that Cheney’s credibility is finally being chipped away for the general public to see, and very soon it should be time to finally get to those closed secret energy meetings. It’s in the interest of the America people. Global climate change isn’t going away.
We are in the era now where the current hurricance season’s number and ferocity of storms transcends the 30-year oscillator. We’ve beaten all other years in record of storms and intensity. Yes, we’re in a more active natural cycle but this has been enhanced by the hotter waters as well from globla warming: here’ s my point—the economic impact of hurricanes is enough now to help make people who think with their pocketbooks realize that it’s really time for alternative fuels and at the very least fuel efficiency. The usual argument for postponing alternative fuels has been the idea that it would hurt the American economy. We’re now in the era where the economy is being hurt by the results of that overreliance on fossil fuels (well, the oil CEOs are doing well, but that’s not the American People). A real focus on alternative fuels could help revitalize ailing American companies and stimulate science in the private sector.
Anyhow, I just wanted to take this opportunity to emphasize that the same assertiveness that you demonstrated today needs to be maintained in other areas, and I think the majority of American people are ready to hear the truth and to be able to perceive the synergy of issues like National Security, the war in Iraq, energy economy, the global reputation of the USA (stop the torture-it will help stop inflaming anti-US sentiments). Kick the oil habit and the Middle East won’t be such an attraction to the USAthere will be less justification for American troops, and thus less fuss about Americans defiling Muslim sacred areas. Alrighty, once again, good move today: be firm and sustained, and help other Democrats see that a message of showing how the party represents the interests of the majority of the countryin fact all the country when it comes to security and loss of needless life-resonates. Politicians owe the public competence, intellectual honesty, and ethical consistency. I’m an independent by the way, just for the record.

  322. Senator Reid, don’t listen to Mary Cornay.

You go; we need to remind the Republicans that there are other ways of looking at the world, and steamrollering over the rest of us.

There has been in this country, for the last five years, a true tyrrany of the majority, and it is exactly the thing the checks and balances of the constitution, and especially the Bill of Rights, were established to prevent.

Please, carry the fight to them. Let them know that this is a big ol’ country, and we have something to say, and more important, we liberals have a long tradition of carrying the American dream to fruition.

    Thank you, Senator.

  348. Sen Reid,

My deepest appreciation to you for your actions today. I am an average American, living in the Heartland who has been, like so many other Americans, watching our country and our constitution be destroyed. I have watched our family income go down over the last 5 years. I have worried about how to pay the bills. I have, like so many Americans, felt helpless and voiceless to defend myself and the middle-class. I have watched with horror as the Rebulican party has stripped the poor of much needed assistance and services – and they’ve done so without a pang of guilt.

It seemed as though we had passed the point of no return – until today. Millions of Americans owe you and the other Democrats in the Senate a debt of gratitude.

The truth must be told to the American people and you have forced open a door that has too long been closed by those that lied us into war, mortgaged our country and our children’s future, robbed from the poor to give to the rich and used hate and fear to divide this nation.

This is what an opposition party should be! Thank You!

Oh yes, lets have that investigation.
I want the greater public to know about the Clinton administration getting to the bottom of it, tracking them down in Yemin, having the hauled back to trial, and about their now living out the rest of their sorry ended lives in a United States Prison.
I want the public to know about Richard Clark gathering the counter terror principles together weekly, and more often if the situation was hot to do as well as could be done to thwart terrorist ops..
I want the public to know that the 09 11 01 crew made alot of mistakes that the Clintonian method of working the problem would have caught.
If the radical right rigging in Florida had failed, and Al Gore was elected, the Twin Towers of the WTC would be a continuing part of the New York City skyline, and the WTC would still look like the box the UN was shipped in.

Reid was trying to thwart White House efforts to move past the Scooter Libby indictment. Yesterday, Bush had everyone talking about Alito. Today he unveiled a big program to prepare for a possible outbreak of avian flu. Reid wants to change the subject back. “The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really about,” he said on the floor of the Senate today in regular session, “how the administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions.”

Time for the Repubs to ruin Reids life.

Like I said on Friday…the rat children can’t deal with the fact that Fitzmas was very bad this year. They got a pair of socks instead of the hoped-for Playstation.

    And they can’t handle it.

Fitzmas turned out to be Fitadan and forced the ‘Rats to continue their power fast.

C’mon, everyone. Where’s your “compassion”? Dingy Harry is heartbroken. He has nothing. He serves a party that offers nothing. He’s bitter, angry and frustrated. He’s probably resorted to thumb-sucking. He might even be sleeping with a blanket. Let’s give him a break.
    NOT! BWAHAHAHAHAHA! (snort) BWAHAHAHAHA!

    To: Roscoe Karns
The gentlefolk who spent an amazing amount of their lives telling us about the Senate being the “saucer that cools” (blah blah blah) during the Clinton impeachment hearings threw a temper tantrum today because the two-year, politically driven investigation into what really happened when their churl, Valerie Plame’s boy-toy, lied about his CIA employment didn’t result in a witch hunt against Carl Rove or the “neocon conspiracy.” When the little brats didn’t get their way, they dragged the Senate out of the conservatory, right past the playpen, and into the pigpen. Reid and Schumer are petulant two year olds, and their true colors are finally showing through.

If they pull this stunt again, here’s what I want to see: Republican Senators demanding closed door sessions to demand investigations into: Hillary Clinton’s fundraising, Chuckie Schemer’s DSCC’s theft of Mike Steele’s financial records, Kerry & Kennedy outing a REAL undercover CIA agent on the floor of a Senate hearing room, Chappaquidick, New Jersey governors and senators, and Barbara Boxer’s existence. One a day between now and Christmas ought to do it.

  373. If you really believe that President BUSH lied – - THAT THERE NEVER WERE ANY WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION IN IRAQ AND HE TOOK US TO WAR SOLELY FOR HIS OIL BUDDIES—then read this…..

“One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them. That is our bottom line.”
    – President Clinton, Feb. 4, 1998

“If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction program.”
    – President Clinton, Feb. 17, 1998

“Iraq is a long way from [the USA], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.”
    – Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998

“He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983.”
    – Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

”[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq’s refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs.”
    – Letter to President Clinton, signed by Sens. Carl Levin,
Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others Oct. 9, 1998

“Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.”
    – Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

“Hussein has … chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies.”
    – Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999

“There is no doubt that … Saddam Hussein has invigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies.”
    – Letter to President Bush, Signed by Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL,)
    and others, December 5, 2001

“We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandated of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them.”
    – Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002

“We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country.”
    – Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

“Iraq’s search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in
    power.” – Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002

“We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction.”
    – Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002

“The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons…”
    – Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002

“I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force—if necessary—to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security.”
    – Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002

“There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the
next five years … We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction.”
    – Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002

“He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his
chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do” Rep.
    – Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002

“In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members .. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons.”
    – Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002

“We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction.” – Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002

“Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime … He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation … And now he is miscalculating America’s response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real
    ...”
    – Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

  376. ARREST JOE WILSON
Joe Wilson lied as was confirmed by the 911 Commission Report. Wilson lied that he was sent on his mission by Vice President Cheney. Wilson “outed” his wife as a CIA spy in his autobiography. Worst of all, Wilson lied about Saddam not procuring materials for his nuclear weapons program. Wilson’s lies contributed to the killing of almost 2,000 US soldiers. Folks, this is not a partisan issue. All Americans should demand the immediate arrest of Joe Wilson. He is a serious threat to all Americans.

Our troops are forgotten and abandoned as they are used as so much fodder by the bush league as it pursues the PNAC agenda.
Democrat Wes Clark has some quite good ideas for getting them home, and they are not about cutting or running.
Some Democrats talk about firearms control; the nabobs of the radical right use the issue to jack you around by your fear. Vermont Governor Howard Dean said of firearms control, it is different in New York City than in rural Vermont. I know you Jeff, would like to ignore that.
Filibuster the nominees? If the chimp sends up such ilk as has been seen lately, that’s the oversight job and charge.

In keeping with His understanding of the Constitution, President Clinton nominated with the advice and consent of Congress. 387. Harry,

As a former Republican, now Non-Partisan, who voted for you in 2004, please get out of the parisan bickering over why we went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. We are there based on the information you, W and others had at the time. Bin Laden predicted in 2001, after we invaded Afghanistan, that all they had to do was keep up their efforts as the Americans would eventually implode on themselves in partisan bickering. I have no argument with the facts that WMDs have not been found, that there may have been a rush to act, etc. No argument. But we are there and you are leading the partisan bickering that seems to make the BL prediction come true.

Placing the blame is easy and obvious (W, Cheney, you, others convinced by the intelligence you all received at the time); please help find solutions to the problems that we face. Stirring up the pot on the short term basis does not advance the Democratic cause without realistic solutions where the Iraqi, Afghan and people win over the long term.

    Respectfully,

get in the President’s State of the Union speech? Colin Powell didn’t use them in his presentation before the U.N. because he didn’t feel that they passed the smell test

yet someone thought they smelled good enough for the president to use in the most important speech that a president gives each – and in that year, a speech on the eve of war.

At that time, Charles DeGaulle had such trust in the U.S. that that he said he didn’t need to see the evidence.

It was a crime of the highest order, ruining our international standing and good will for the profit of the oil & weapons industries, and deeply undermining our National Security.

Your move today to force the Senate into closed session was brilliant. Please keep the heat turned up on Republican corruption and lawless arrogance. You will get a groundswell of support from the majority of Americans who are sick and tired of the direction Bushco has been steering us. That whole gang has to go, preferably to jail.

Also, now is the time to press ahead on uncovering the nasty illegal torture system. America must stand for decency. There is no excuse for torture or extrajudicial killing, ever. Rumsfeld must be called to account and taken down. His America is not the country I was raised to believe in.

You got the media’s, and the country’s, attention today, good work. But you need to do the same thing about voting reform otherwise you won’t take back the Senate and the House next year. The Republicans haven’t won a presidential election since 1988, they stole the last two. As long as we let private corporations count our votes the Republicans will retain control of Congress and the White House. Why don’t you call all Democratic representatives onto the Capital steps and have a big news conference about all the vote fraud that has taken place the last several elections? And tell the nation the Republicans are not letting bills like Rush Holt’s HR 550 get out of committee. Most Republicans will vote for paper ballots if these bills can get voted on.

  412. Thank You Senator Reid! We will add you to the list of politicians standing up for us – Conyers, Boxer, Waters, and Tubbs-Jones. These have been dark days for our country ever since 5 people put this administration in power in 2000. Don’t let them continue to ride roughshod over us any longer. We’ve had enough – lying us into a war for their profit and oil, damaging our national security by outing a CIA agent for political gain, suppressing or taking away our right to vote and our civil liberties, abusing prisoners, passing laws to benefit corporations and the wealthy while undermining the poor and middle class, etc. Don’t let them totally win this one. As E. J. Dionne Jr. wrote in the Washington Post “Has anyone noticed that the coverup worked?” Well, we have to make everyone aware of the high crimes and treason they have committed. Anyone who thinks they didn’t out the CIA agent to benefit themselves and the Iraq war, and then try to cover it up until after the election, has their head in the sand. Don’t allow them to change the subject. Give ‘em hell Harry. The rest of the dems should take a lesson from you. Your grandchildren should be proud of you especially the one yet to be born. This is truly a gift to her. (Anyone who saw Boston Legal on Channel 6 tonight should send them an e-mail thanking them for a great story on the war in Iraq. 414. Dear Senator Reid,

This proud former Marine thanks you, sir.

You are standing up for those serving their country, who have been treated like crap by this White House and this Republican Congress. They should be ashamed of the way they’ve treated our soldiers, except that they HAVE no shame.

Yeah, they LOVE to hide behind soldiers, and use them in their commercials. But they lie us into war, don’t prepare for the war… Then they don’t give us proper equipment. They get us KILLED and MAIMED. Then they cut our medical benefits for when we come home missing limbs, while rewarding Dick Cheney’s company with big fat wasteful contracts. It’s a sin against the soldiers and their family.

And they’re a bunch of chickenhawks, to boot—they love war AS LONG AS THEY AND THEIR KIDS DON’T HAVE TO SERVE. Wouldn’t want to get their own hand dirty, now.

Of course, you’re getting the usual rightwing / Fox News scumbags commenting here. Yeah, what else is new? Big deal. They’re a shameless bunch of Karl Rove / Rush Limbaugh wannabes. Ignore them. They’ve got nothing but lies and hate. And they’ve already proven that they’re TRAITORS to this country, to the sodliers that serve the USA, and to everything good and decent. These pro-treason, morally perverted chickenhawks can go to hell. (And when they die, they definitely will. The Lord does not take kindly to those who lie with so little shame, like the Fox New propagandists. They are the Republican version of the Soviet Union’s Pravda.)

God bless you, Senator Reid. My wife and I will say a special prayer for you tonight, and then—like we do every noght—we will pray for our soldiers who have been betrayed by greedy, power-hungry politicians who don’t give a damn about them.

  429. Senator Reid,

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for standing up to the lying bastards of the Bush administration. GIVE THEM HELL!! It’s tempting to say “Don’t stop until the fires are burning them”; they certainly haven’t hesitated to order torture of the prisoners illegally held at Gitmo and Abu Ghraib—but we have more morals than they do and even perjurers and liars don’t deserve torture.

I’ve already written my senators (Cantwell and Murray, both D-WA) to ask them to support you in any way possible.

I can’t wait until the impeachment hearings begin. Thanks again.

  430. The telephone mailbox is full, so I’ll add my thanks on the blog. THANK YOU! Someone has finally blown on the dying ember of democracy within our so called government.

Please, don’t let this moment slide by, as so many have. Bushco must be stopped – our beloved Constitution will not withstand 3 more years of their sculldodgery and carpetbagging.

Good on you, Senator. We’ll work on buying a backbone for the rest of the Dems who’ve been waiting for a leader.

I encourage you, and all officials representing the American people, to do something about your selective memory problems. It seems to be endemic in the halls, these days.

  435. Senator Reid;

Words cannot sufficiently express the thanks that I have for the upstanding leadership you have shown today.

I am not of your constituency, but certainly applaud those who are for selecting you as their representative.

Your actions of today transcend partizenship. It is an attempt to shed light on a number of questions weighing heavily on the minds of a vast majority of Americans.

Liberty cannot come without security, and Justice is equally important as a foundational tenet of this great society!

I applaud you and your colleagues, on either side of the aisle, who are championing this call.

  436. It’s about time that we stop just going ahead with whatever Bush says. If he’s not a liar, he’s a fool—which is even worse! We cannot have a fool running this country…truth is, he has been running it into the ground.

It’s good to demand the truth. I don’t know if Bush is capable of telling the truth, but our demand for it must drown out the chorus of FOX News and other Bush cronies.

I hope you can convince the other democratic senators who are lurking somewhere in a safe, soft corner of that Capitol building that the only way out into the light is to show constituents a look at their new and improved backbone.

Many of the neo-republican, hate radio addicted, angry at everyone for everything, venom spreading partisans can only express their feelings like playground bullies. The only way to get their attention is with a soft voice and a swift action.

Today was perfect. Do it again every legitiment chance you get. Now that we know your capabilities, we’ll be expecting more and we’re right there beside you every step of the way.

  444. Thank you, Sen. Reid. Your actions have restored a sober voice to the Senate, dominated by Majority Republicans drunk with power.

When you lie your way into war and unnecessarily and wrongly out a CIA operative for political retribution, you have abdicated your moral authority to govern and sacrificed the public trust on an alter to political opportunism, profiteering & gouging, cronyism and an extreme ideological philosophy which seeks to undue those very traditions which earned America the respect and admiration of the world in the first place – something we have lost under six years of Republicans and conservatism.

Today, Sen. Reid, you spoke for a nation hungry for real leadership. And you have given the Republicans notice that they will be held accountable for violating the public trust and leading the nation to war with lies.

They lied to you, Senator, to the Congress, to the entire country. This cannot be allowed to pass unaccounted; their must be reparations for such a dishonorable breach of the public trust, for there is little reason left to defer to the leadership or trust the Majority party leadership to govern responsibly.

  450. WELL DONE, Senator Reid!

I’ve watched C-SPAN every day for the past three years in utter DESPAIR over what this crooked bunch of lying despots has done to our country. Today, YOU began the long-overdue march toward the TRUTH about the Iraq fiasco.
That’s one hell of a start!

PLEASE, Good Sir, DON’T STOP NOW. We MUST find out where the SURPLUS went; where the MISSING BILLIONS in Iraq and the Gulf Coast are; whether our fellow Americans will have to choose between heat and food this winter (i.e. how to END the OBSCENE OIL PROFITS), and whether we can IMPEACH Mr. Bush and then TRY the entire administration for WAR CRIMES. (And that’s just for starters.)

You, Patrick Fitzgerald and Mr. & Mrs. Wilson are our BEST HOPE for undoing the incredible damage wrought by Bush and his Band of Republican Thieves. Rest assured that the majority of America is BEHIND YOU 100%. Keep it up!

  458. 2,000 of our men/women soldiers have died in this “war”

Hundreds of thousands more have been hurt and maimed, whether the pain afflicted them has been physical or mental.

We have killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, many of them women, children, and men who have no political agenda. Those young men who are left (those with no political agenda) who see their babies die in their arms, or who hold their nieces or brothers in their arms, or their brothers or sisters, fathers or grandfathers…as they die from American bombs or gunfire. ”

WILL THEY NOT BE THE NEXT GENERATION OF TERRORISTS????

We have 18, 19.20 year old boys/women/men coming home and hanging themselves in some quiet place because they cannot deal with what this country has asked of them.

I have been watching you for some time now and have to say I agree with most all the positions you take, in looking out for the average citizen. Your stand today against the tyranny of the few thugs currently destroying the country from within the White House was courageous and the best show of patriotism I have seen in a long, long time. In my opinion you are one of only a very few, and I must say the most honorable politician back there (I hold the bulk of them in very low esteem, given their self-serving agendas and obvious corruption). I would hope you would consider running for President of the US next time around.

I am also alumni of USU and LDS, and you have given me new hope in our country once again. May freedom finally bring down the despots, and I mean the worst hue of despots the world now has—Bush and his cabal of cronies.

    Senate Goes Into Rare Closed

    Posted By:Dreadnought, 11/1/2005 3:01:01 PM

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate went into closed session Tuesday after Democrats enacted a rare parliamentary rule forcing the shut down of the Senate so senators could speak in a classified session about the lead-up to the war in Iraq. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid demanded the chamber be closed so they could hold a secret session that they say was prompted by “misinformation and disinformation”...

I don’t know why anyone is surprised; the DemocRats have always done their Dirty Work behind closed doors! The Clintons’ motto of Deny, Distract and Destroy has become the Mantra of the entire Leadership….I should say the Lack of Leadership …..of the DNC. With a Madman, Howard Dean, as head of the DNC and the Screeching Banshee Nancy Pelosi, who looks like an Anorexic Zombie who can’t close her eyelids …....add to that the Old Drunk Ted Kennedy, who got away with allowing Mary Jo Kopechne to drown….and Robert KKK Byrd….and Harry Reid, who has the look of a Nazi for sure with his cold blue dead-fish eyes….what do you expect? I might add, those are just the first few I thought of….there are many more!

They are Conspiring to Destroy and Oust a duly-elected President of the United States; this is Treasonous and should be considered a Threat.
Despicable and Low-Class Tactics…we need to SHOUT IT to the RoofTops about the Independent Investigation into Clinton Appointed Henry Cisneros being put on Web Site for Public Consumption….

Power is more important than principle. Voinovich is another. They are not with the program. So many unfortunate & misinformed conclusions posted here. What happened today is in the Senate rules. # 21 says “any’ member may invoke it & only one “second” is needed. Why in the world would the Rs stay away when the vicious, slanderous statements of Reid’s were echoing in the chamber? He was sullying the President, the Intell. Comm. and the war itself. No Repub. knew this was going to happen. Imagine what posters would say if they had NOT participated! This all was a result of the Pres. changing the subject to Bird Flu, the Appointment of Alito and the Dems. want to focus on their hero Joe Wilson & the Libby indictment and thet’re PO’d that Rove is still employed. Logic says “Praise the Lord & pass the ammunition”

I can’t tell you how much I respect what you did today. It is time for the Dems to stick together, take no prisoners, and to let the chips fall where they may. Except for the right wing nuts, this majority of this country is scared to death at the damage they are doing to our country and the middle class. Debt, deficits, racketeering, job loss, loss of health care, states in trouble, public schools with not enough money, environmental destruction with more to come, tax cuts for the rich and loss of tax deductions for homeowners, a bankruptcy bills hurting people and small business; Roe v Wade soon to become illegal relegating the poor to back alleys and coat hangers once more, pharmacists refusing to do their jobs and getting away with it when they don’t approve of the drug, complete comingling of church and state – holy cow Senator Reid, enough is enough. We may not be able to stop them, but we sure as hell can go kicking and screaming. Please get the Dems in line including Pelosi and Hoyer and stand up to this group of thugs.

I want King George IMPEACHED, and the traitors hung. Give em Harry and make sure the Dems stay in line for a change.

Please, please keep this up. But beware of their slime machine…..I am sure it is aimed towards you now. Also, please stay out of small airplanes…..we need you now, more than ever before.

  488. Way to go Harry! I’ve been writing to my MD senators for months telling them they need to GROW SOME! Don’t back down now! I think it’s hilarious that Bill “I have a blind trust that’s not blind” Frist had the audacity to call you on “principles.” Someone needs to stand up to this administration and the republican controlled congress and let them know that we, the normal people in this country, are NOT happy with them. This is a great first step. Can we talk about Rumsfeld’s financial stake in Tamiflu next? Or how about why the “Christian” right is allowing this president to torture human beings? Don’t forget the Alito filibuster!

    Keep it up!

  513. Thank you Senator Reid! Finally the democrats showed some patience and some backbone. We must continue to pick our battles rather than just say no on every repub idea. Ignoring the Miers mess was the best thing we could have done. I’ve learned that if we give them enough rope, they will hang themselves. Let them have Alito – we need to keep the focus on the wrongdoing which hurt our country and killed over 2000 and injured over 10,000 of our friends and family. Anytime they try to pick a fight or change the subject, we need to come right back at ‘em hard on the issues of their lack of integrity, immorality, lies, and greed. God knows that they gave us enough ammo – Frist, Delay, K street project etc….

Thanks again Harry – we love ya!

All you people are so politically charged that you do not even accept the fact that in 1999, in Clinton’s State of the Union address, even he admitted Saddam was not complying with UN inspectors. In 1998, Operation Desert Fox was ordered by Clinton because, and I quote, “Saddam Hussein must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors with nuclear weapons, poison gas or biological weapons (CNN.com, Dec. 16, 1998).” You can’t have it both ways. Are you proud of the fact that your president has given huge tax breaks to the wealthiest 1% of the nation’s people? Anne – first I haven’t posted 20 times and I’m not scared of a whole lot, especially posting my views. Second I don’t even know what a freeper is and I am not involed in any pro war rallies of any type. I’m a taxpayer in Sen. Reid’s district. He is my Senator and I think he is obstructing. He has forgotten his district here for the limelight. I think you got the wrong guy. I hate war, I’ve been there, however freedom does not come without it.

  526. Senator Reid:

I must apologize for my student Mike. He said you were no Harry Truman. This is factually correct, but his use of the possessive “your” instead of the contraction “you’re” was inexcusable. In addition, it appears that he needs a lesson in government.

I will make him stay after school today and write a report detailing the differences between a Senate Minority Leader and a President. Thanks and good luck.

  527. Jeff: What kind of disrespect are the troops being shown? I wholeheartedly support the troops. What I don’t support is the war in Iraq because it was waged under false pretenses. You’re right. The war didn’t start on 9/11. The war started behind closed doors about a year prior to that date—in the minds of Cheney, et al. Senator Reid is not obstructing. He’s trying to remove the obstructions in the Senate which have been put up by the Republicans. Sen. Reid is trying to get to the truth of the facts surrounding the U.S. invasion of Iraq. As to Nam, I supported the troops then, but I did not support that war. I admire your bravery and service to this country, even though I didn’t agree with the premises. I love this country, too, and I want it back.

  553. I have not had much use for the democratic party as you have let pass a number of laws that only benefit those that need no benefit, and oppress those that need it most but in this instance I applaud you for doing what should have been done quite sometime ago. I find your party to be populated by a bunch wimps. The disengenuous claim that no one knew saddam had no weapons is belied by the statements of Hans Blix and Scott Ritter stating the fact that there were none. Why did you, as a group, not know this when I did, and I have no access to anything like the information you are privy to. Further, rescind the patriot act, disband homeland security they are both useless, ineffective behemoths meant only to control us. Witness Katrina. Further, razor wire atop chainlink fence and called a free speech zone-Is Not A Free Speech Zone at a Democratic convention for gods sake. I am proud of you Harry but I hold your party in contempt for their silence and complete, and I mean complete, lack of courage.

  561. Thank you, Senator Reid, for bringing democracy back to the Senate Floor. Don’t give up and don’t let the Right Wing Conspirators stall the intelligence committee any further. This is just the beginning of an awakening of this country after a long, long, long sleep at the detriment of everything most Americans believe in.

I fear that the damage they have caused both abroad and here at home is too foregone, but if the Senate leadership can pull itself out of the fog of denial and the divisive partisanship that Bush the Divider, not “The Uniter,” has brought to the good people of the USA, then at least we can get back our pride and perhaps start changing our image. Let’s have a public inquiry into the conspiracy to go to war and the cover-up to the conspiracy to go to war, fashioned just like the Watergate hearings. It is the medicine that this country needs.

  570. The element of surprise is always a valuable tool whether in a physical conflict or in the arena of ideas. I laughed my ass off watching Frist’s apoplectic “Harry kicked our ass and we didn’t see it coming” childish tirade. Senator Reid, you sir, are a brave Democratic patriot with a huge set of red, white and blue balls. Congratulations and thank you for a bright spot in an otherwise Republican smoke screen, neo-con fear filled news day.

  572. Great job Senator Reid but you must do more.

It isn’t enough to flush out the facts about Bush making up intelligence on Iraq.

[We all know President Clinton destroyed Saddam’s stock piles of WsMD in 1998 when he dropped over a million pounds of ordnance on Iraq in a 70hr. period during operation Desert Fox. And we didn’t need evidence of their destruction, Clinton’s word was good enough for us!]

    You must uncover what really happened on 9-11 {wink wink}

You and I both know that it wasn’t 19 hijackers that flew those planes into the buildings, IT WAS BUSH!! He had those planes wired for remote control and he guided them in by radio control.

  575. Dear Senator Reid,

Sir, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for having the fortitude to stand up for the American people . Your courage to take the actions you did yesterday in the Senate has given me and so many more reason to hope that the lies and coverups that has gripped our nation for the last 4+ years will finally stop.

This war is without validity, unnecessary and nightmarish. It has cost this country billions and thousands of lives for America and Iraq. It is time for the truth be told about this issue and so much more. This administration is without honor or compassion, conservative or otherwise,
and has soiled America’s name with it’s criminal activities.

Keep it up and get the answers that are so badly needed. You and Mr Fritzgerald have become heros not only to me but to all of the rational, thinking and caring citizens of this country. We have been kept silenced for far too long!

Keep strong and stay the course!

  576. You made me proud to be a Democrat again with your actions yesterday. I congratulate you on your courage and hope this is the first step to reclaiming at least one house of congress next year.

In their pathetic excuse for a news conference Frist and company looked obviously confused and weakened. They lashed out inanely with nothing more than name calling.

By contrast, Durbin and Levin were quite eloquent, straight-forward and informational in theirs.

Please don’t stop with this one important move. Americans are ready and waiting for congress to resume its role of oversight.

  577. #543 Then how can he be a Democrat? The Democrat party is the pro-death party. More abortions all the time is our motto. We must kick out Harry Reid if he refuses to acknowledge a woman’s right to choice. That trumps everything, even impeaching Chimpy McBushilterBurton. Today I will perform more abortions to spite Harry Reid.

  582. Thank you Mr. Reid.

Your transparent stunt to deflect attention from your lack of ideas via invocation of Rule 21 will ensure that the GOP holds the reigns for yet another election cycle. Was this creative tantrum an idea derived from Rovian-spiked Boston tea or did you assemble this trial ballon with your own set of tinkertoys and balloon juice? Whatever the motivation, the Republican party is ever grateful for the continued flailing in lieu of novel, mature thought.

Your noble attempt to further sabotage the contemporary Democratic party, however, does have unfortunate consequences. Some of us would prefer more than a single party democracy so that we may avoid the incestuous and compromised assemblage that inevitably occurs when one party attains too much power. Your clumsy tactics, sadly, ensure that such a trend of GOP expansion will continue unabated since petty and disingenous pontification remains blatantly self-absorbed and wholly unappealing to most citizens.

Nonetheless, I wish you the best of luck tearing down from within so that a new set of more enlightened representatives will refill the rolls. You, Sir, are a patriot.

  583. But where have all the Democrats been throughout all this 5 year destruction of American prestige, wealth and integrity? We are now hated by every country in the world with a few exceptions. Even Canada despises us for failure to live up to promises. It’s about time the other party did something! We silent, frightened Americans are furious with all of you. Other Americans are living in a fantasy world, encompassing TV, movies, partying, and unfortunately drugs. Because we have lost pride in our country—we aren’t the good guys anymore!!!
Congress, and particularly this administration have the burden of this “new, hypocritical, corrupt, bankrupt and fearful nation” on your backs.

You would be more credible in your (extremely belated) moral outrage if you had mentioned the most innocent victims in this criminal endeavour – not your soldier boys selling snuff for porn, but the hundreds of thousands of iraqi civilians that have been maimed, tortured and killed by them for your country’s greed for global hegemony!

So give ‘em hell Harry, but get your moral compass straight or all we will see is a cheap politic stunt meant to put your name into the running (Reid/Clinton 2008? Yeah right, prove you’re worth it!)

Now we’ve all had to reap what the Senate sowed…especially the Iraqi people. They’ve been killed and injured in far greater numbers than our “mainstream” media reports.

Okay, rally the cowards hiding under their desks, enlist their help, coddle them, do what ever the hell it takes to bring down this administration, a force of darkness, the likes of which I have never seen in my life, they are bad for people, animals, countries, and when you get down to where the rubber meets the road, they are good for nothing. If they want to experience the joy and and death of a war they wanted so badly they lied and subverted truth, commited treasonous acts anyone else would receive very long prison sentences for-send their sorry fucking asses over there and give them all jobs leading convoys out of Bagdhad in armorless vehicles they promised to fix. Let them experience the death and evisceration, the killing and slaughter of woman, children, all innocent, all DEAD for their resumes, to look good as a war president, to the obscene accumulation of profit. It is fucking disgusting. 612. Hello,

Congratulations on having the closed session. I have been disillusioned with the Democrats for awhile, since they’ve avoided really standing up to the Republicans. Hopefully, this closed session marks the end of that. Democrats must get over centrism and conciliation, offer a coherent alternative and fight HARD for it. This is the ONLY way that the Democratic party will win back disillusioned voters of all stripes and save our country. For the 2006 elections, the Dems must present a broad platform of bold ideas that they will implement if they win back Congress. Among these ideas should be:
—An immediate withdrawal of all troops from Iraq, or a definite timetable for doing so.
—A “no stone unturned” investigation of possible crimes committed by this presidential administration, with impeachment on the table as a possibility.
—A broad international effort to stop nuclear proliferation, with an accompanying freeze on all development of new nuclear weapons by the US.
—An alternative-energy Manhattan Project to eliminate America’s need for fossil fuels.
—Publicly financed elections, in order to stop corporate interests from controlling our elections (like they have for so long).

We must not harbor any illusions about these goals. Nothing is more dangerous than a wounded and cornered wild animal, and the Republicans will fight harder than ever before to stop this. We must fight even harder. I’ve often wondered if the Democrats have the spine to do this, but yesterday’s events are a very good sign.

In short, Sen, Reid, you must keep doing what you did yesterday. Only do a LOT more of it!

  616. Thank you, Senator Reid!!! We need to have confirmation of what we are already certain – that the administration lied to, terrified and covered up their true intentions when it came to the American public. And what has been gained? Billions of dollars for Halliburton (Cheney) and Bechtel (Rumsfeld).

They want to cut Medicaid, Medicare, Food Stamps, and any other program that deals with the middle class and the poor. But they never have a thought of rescinding the tax breaks (more billions) for the most wealthy. At this rate, Republicans will acheive their dream of a two class society – a small number of rich and the majority of poor in a few years.

Thank you and all of the other Democratic Senators!

It was great to see a democrat finally have the courage to fight back against these republicans who are complacent in the idea that the people and their representatives won’t challenge them. Our representatives are supposed to do exactly what you did yesterday. You stood up for the people at a time when we feel powerless to stop a rampaging, world stomping administration. The Bush administration is out of control in their hunger to dominate the planet militarily, commercially, and ideologically. Feel free to call for a closed door session tomorrow on this obscene issue of secret prisons. The American people have had enough. Please understand you will have a civilian army of millions of American patriots behind you in the war against this neo-conservative menace. 629. Thank you Senator Reid. Forty-five years ago I read “Government of the people, for the people, by the people, in other words democracy can only work if the people can think clearly for themselves or at least recognize clear thinking on the part of others.” People must have the facts in order to come to a rational decision.
If the invasion of Iqaq was made on faulty intelligence and flawed facts then the thinking behind it was also faulty. It is time the American people and the rest of the world are told the truth. President Bush has destroyed America’s credibility in the rest of the world. The only way for America to regain credibility and its prestiege in the rest world is to speak the truth and act accordingly. It should stop interfering in the rest of the world and lead by example. Keep up the good work senator. A Canadian observer.

  636. To quote 80s band ‘Twisted Sister”:

WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Bravo to you, Senator Reid. Stay strong. These slimy, corrupt, morally bankrupt thugs are going to try to fight back with every ounce of spiteful venom they have. Do not back down! You have an army of millions supporting you.

The time is now. Push for the truth and expose the rotten bastards for the disgrace to the nation that they are… and send a message to America -and the world- that such rot will never infest our government again.

I think the reason that they are so apoplectic at your maneuver (pure genius, by the way) is that they are terrified at the prospect of the truth being exposed.

You blasted the door open, Senator Reid. It’s giving them conniptions. That’s just the start, though. Keep pushing, keep nagging, keep pushing until the whole truth is exposed.

“Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

  637. I am so happy that you and our wonderful Illinois Senator Durbin have had a great success in breaking through and showing all of us Democrat patriots that you are fighting hard for us. You will go down in history if you two figure out a way to bring this fascist WhiteHouse to justice. Fighting fascism is not—or shouldn’t be—a partisan matter. BTW, have you heard the brilliant slogan going around the internet now? “Would someone give Bush a blow job so we can impeach him?” I love it.

  638. THANK YOU HARRY
Closing the Senate was a stroke of genius. Republicans need a wake up call. I thought Frist was going to have a stroke. He said it was a “stunt”
but a stunt was diagnosing Terry Schiavo from a video. That’s not original. I got it from Jon Stewart!

  639. God bless you Harry Reid for having the courage to stand up against corrupted money- based politics. You really do speak for the people and ALL the people including the masses who are not the top rich people in this country which is most of us. Please please please keep it up and do your best to stand up to these lying crooks. You are operating from a true spiritual base of compassion and it will reflect back to you ten fold. God bless you a million times. Thank you sir!

  640. Senator Reid,

I thank you for not only making your state proud, but smacking mine in the face. Let’s face it, we all need it at times…:)...

As I write this there are 639 (I’m 640) that have your back on this one. We know how this administration has tainted our great nation around the globe. It’s up to people such as yourself to tote an extremely heavy load. I’ll take a couple tons. Give ‘Em Hell Harry!!!

  641. Give me more hell Harry! Hugs from our entire family from coast to coast! I can just see your name up there in the history books right next to my dearest friend and mentor, Senator Wayne Morse! Wow! What a guy!

We have your back Harry! America is with you all the way!

All our love to you and yours!

  643. Dear Senator Reid:

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for having the strength and courage to sink your teeth into this mess! Sink em deep, sink em long, and rip the lies of this administration open for all the world to see!!! That is necesssary before we can truly begin to heal and allow our brothers and sisters in Iraq and elsewhere in the world to heal.

I’m so horrified by what this administration has done! It’ll take many generations of Americans to attone for this evil invasion, for the rape and torture of a helpless yet sovreign nation. Weapeons of mass destruction? They couldn’t even protect their own air space. And this administration knew that going in.

Sink your teeth deep and don’t let go! Make the evil ones holding our country hostage in the White House account for what they’ve done to us and the world.

May they receive their dues before the end of their tenure in office, so the world can swiftly see what happens when trusted officials in America go afoul!

  644. Thank you for seeing the light. Jesus would of thrown Mr Robertson from the temple for his lies and false religion. We need to put it in the press everywhere about the lies and treasonous acts of Mr Bush and all his followers who failed to question the evidence he presented for going to war. They need to be locked up without bail as other terrorist suspects are, for they are worse than Bin Ladden. This administration is conducting class genocide on the poor Americans who have lost their jobs and can’t find another that pays their bills, so they join the Army for a job, and end up dead or maimed for life. As for election fraud, I think it should be redone on paper ballots,in Ohio and Fla for sure, I bet he would loose by a landslide if the votes were fairly counted. Thank you Sir for your stance and being a real American.

  645. Thank you Sen. Reid for proving that we are willing to fight for what is right for the American people. Let’s throw the bums out! This administration stinks worse than bay bottom at low tide!

  647. Thanks Senator Reid, For Standing Up for Freedom, Equality, and JUSTICE. tHE REST OF THE Senators’ need to get some balls’. LONG LIVE THE Republic. Bring back dignity and respect to this great Nation.

  648. This administration has brought our country to the point were we are the laughing stock of the world. They are not “public servants”, but instead are self serving. Impeachment would be too kind. They deserve a different kind of Gov. job with housing and all provided at taxpayers expense. This job would be making auto tags in a FEDERAL PEN! It would most likely be the only honest thing they’ve done in their collective lives. Also, they would finally understand the equality that is the foundation of our constitution! BRING THE BASTARDS DOWN!

  649. Former ambassador Joseph Wilson spoke recently at a National Press Club luncheon. His talk will be shown again today, Saturday 11/05/05 a little after 1 pm eastern, noon central on C-span. I watched it live the other day. Anyone who wants to hear Mr. Wilson explain his story should watch.

Months ago, Rep. John Conyers held a hearing in the basement of the House (because the majority party would not allow a real conference room to be used.) Joe Wilson testified and this hearing was also broadcast on C-span. Both events can be found and viewed from the C-span website archives.

We need the democratic leadership to be relentless in bringing out the truth.

  651. Patricia Steward,

Clinton did not without justification kill tens of thousands of Iraqi people, and over 2000 American Soldiers. He never refused aid to disaster victims and ordered them shot on site. He certainly never blockaided a disaster site for five days refusing to allow anyone to help victims. President Clinton never disgraced our country with war crimes, nor did he violate the Geneva Convention. President Clinton did not have massive unemployment, or three dollar a gallon gas prices. President Clinton didn’t give all the government contracts to his vice president’s business associates. President Clinton never jeapordized the nations health by offending drug suppliers in Canada, so that we would be unable to obtain flu vaccines. President Clinton never exposed CIA agents. Bush has done all of these things and a lot more to hurt the American People, and he is a discrace to this country and to the office of President. President Clinton may have told a fib about his sex life, but he never endanged anyone’s life by that lie.

President Bush is guilty of purgery, murder and treason. Those are called high crimes by the Constitution and he should be impeached. It should also be established wheter he ever really won either election. His entire term of office has been spent in coverup, and if you think he is such a great guy, you are simply uninformed.

Kenneth Star for all his efforts didn’t turn up anything against Clinton, which even merrits mention. Watergate itself pales in comparrison to what Bush has done, and Benidict Arnold deserves a post humous public appology if Bush isn’t punished immediately. By the earlier laws of this nation, he should not only be impeached, he should be hung.

The Bush impeachment is long, long, long overdue. For the past 5 years the Republican owned media, has lied for Bush, Republican majorities in house and senate have protected him. Coverups of massive scale have been allowed, while Bush disregarded the constitution, the geneva convention, and the recomendations of the UN and our Alies.

Instead of abiding by the laws of the land, Bush lied, and started a war that was about his own business interests, and not national security. He has commited clear acts of aggression in light of recent evidence. He has caused massive loss of life, the numbers of which we can only guess because of coverups. Loss of life in Iraq, New Orleans, and all over the United States due to poverty, and the high cost of medical care.

Supporting Bush is unAmerican, unChristian, and Treasonous. The only thing? He has shown us the reason for seperation of Church and state. Without the help of Fundamentalist so called Christians throughout this country, who preached Republicanism, more than Christ, he would never have been put into office. Gore or Kerry either one would have won by a landslide, were it not for some insane notion that only Republicans are Christian. Republican form of Christianity isn’t Christianity at all. It is mean spirited, hate filled, judgmental, and hinges on the fact that people are kept uninformed by refusing to listen to the truth. Jesus said that “Ye shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.” All Harry asked for is the truth. Something Bush has not tried yet.

  652. Yes, I agree and am pleased and relieved to hear and see what you say.

But how about your Agenda portion of this website?—No mention of Iraq; no mention of your support of a woman’s right to choose abortion.

I am afraid that I am still a Democrat who must wait and see.

  653. Dear Senator Reid,

Kudos to the writer that said you are 10 feet tall. Wonderful. You are a pillar of strength in Washington. Sure, Rush Limbaugh might get you down a bit, but stand tall.

As it says in your bio, you are a fighter, sir. We shall overcome.

  654. Senator:

Just read another quote from you that only reinforces your integrity and justifies your leadership role within the party:

The president waved the flag. I saluted. I never expected to be misled by the president of the United States. Sadly, that was the case. Now it is my duty to the people of this country to do what I can to correct that, AT WHATEVER RISK THERE IS TO MY PERSONAL CAREER (emphasis added). There is no shame in being wrong. But it is shameful to be so afraid to admit a mistake that you push a wrong into being a disaster.”

Now THAT’S what I’m talking about! Why is it that so many politicians don’t realize that the best way to insure you’ll CONTINUE having a career is if you make a stand, damn the torpedos of personal loss, so long as that stand is for the people!

Put yourself on the line, and people will follow!

You’re reminding of what it means to be a real man, Harry.

    Thank you.

  655. Thank you Senator Reid for making a stand against the most corrupt white house since Richard Nixon! The one comment I have is that I have not heard a discussion about the Real national security issue that drove the present administration (Dick Cheney in particular) to sell the war in Iraq using false information. It is a small three letter word – OIL. When will the discussion about the wrong path this country is currently taking in regards to our vast energy needs be brought to light? Why are we spending $200 billion dollars on an unjust war where the chances of securing the regions oil look so grim when we could be spending that money to improve mass transportation, vehicle fuel efficency, funding research and development of alternative energy NOW. What is congress waiting for? This is the most serious issue for our time. We can not continue to depend on unstable regions to supply more of our energy needs. Please tell the American people what the true national security issues is so we can demand change!
